My latest Locals Only article for SearchEngineLand is Franchisee SEO – Can You Trust Corporate’s Recommendations?
I often get called by franchises and by franchisees to help with SEO and too often I see the two working against each other. If you don’t feel like reading the piece here are key takeways:
- Franchises need to educate their franchisee partners on SEO before trying to get them to invest in it
- Franchises should not sell franchisees untested SEO services from a third party that they have a financial interest in
- If franchises and franchisees work together they can create a very effective national/local seo program

I thought your post was very useful, both for franchisees, their associations and franchisors. I am going to put a link to it from our newsletter which goes out tomorrow to some 1500 franchisee leaders and attorneys.
SEO and especially local search is not something necessarily residing in the franchisor’s skill set.
This is a skill set that all franchisee associations have to acquire, somehow. Reading articles like yours helps.
Thanks Michael. I am pretty convinced that franchisors and their franchisees could dominate search if they understood the medium better and if they worked together.
It would be a scary day when 7/11 decides to list all of their locations for all of the products that they offer for every corner that they are on. That would be ultimate local spam.
They could dominate “slushies in
” queries 🙂
