- How I got into SEO after working in TV. Once I had to tell Ed McMahon that his idea for a new online talent show was stupid, even though it was kind of great.

A common misperception is Local SEO is just putting a bunch of keywords on your page that contain the name of the city you are targeting, like SEO consultant in Danville, California. It’s actually much better to write something that your customer might actually find engaging. But then again, sometimes SEO really is that stupid.

I have been doing Internet stuff for forever. In 1993, I launched Showtime Networks’ first website:
In 1995, I joined NBC’s first Internet division. I ran NBC.com when it was still weird to see URLs on TV. I did a lot of those early “Hey! Watch TV and do something on this website” stuff:
In 2003, I helped get InsiderPages, an early version of Yelp, off the ground. Someone told me about SEO and we got pretty good at it. At our peak, we had over 5 million monthly visitors. That enabled us to raise $5 million from Sequoia Capital and Softbank. We hired a lot of people, including a head of Marketing, who re-designed the site.
But I didn’t know what I didn’t know about SEO.
When we launched the new site, ALL the Google traffic disappeared.
And I got fired.
The day I got fired I met the head of LATimes.com for a drink. He was excited because he just got approval to redesign their site. “What are you doing for SEO?” I asked. He had no idea what I was talking about.
I explained what had happened to me and he kind of freaked out. He asked if I would be up for doing some SEO consulting. Well, I certainly didn’t have anything else to do, so the LATimes.com became my first SEO client. Not a bad first client…
That was 18 years ago.
Since then, we have worked with hundreds of Bay Area businesses big and small – like Mancini’s Sleepworld, Summit Defense, LogoBoss, & SideTracks – to help them get more customers from Google via SEO and paid search.
