I was reading through the transcript of the excellent discussion of ranking factors by friends of the show Mike Blumenthal and Mary Bowling and figured now would be a good time to post the results of the survey I conducted about the trimodal local search algorithm. The question was pretty basic:

When it comes to prominence, relevance, and proximity what do you think is the most important type of local search ranking factor?

Well, the results are in, and at least to me, they are pretty interesting. Check them out in the infographic below:

Local SEOs are Pretty Smart

I think this is all pretty cool. It shows that the collective zeitgeist of the Local SEO space is already groking the trimodal local search algorithm. To me, the biggest question is this:

As this algorithm becomes more complex and fractured, it will lead to even more data to analyze. Since this turns the already complicated world of local search into a huge data problem, does this mean that SMBs need to double down on their agility and quickly move across channels, rather than doubling down on search?

I bet David Mihm thinks so 😉

Stay tuned for move deep dives into the local search algo. Darren Shaw and I have a cool big data study in the pipeline and we are currently gathering data for an expanded 2017 Local SEO Ranking Factors.
