I recently got an email from a reader asking me for some quick advice on his website which was a local directory of a specific kind of business. I only had a minute but I wanted to give him something that would be helpful. I scanned his site and immediately noticed that the only way to find a business was to enter a zipcode and hit “go”.
The problem with this is that search engine robots cannot enter a zip code and hit “go”. They need content that is crawlable via links. So I told the guy to create a crawlable directory of locations and businesses.
And that’s the secret to doing local search engine optimization. Hopefully I haven’t put myself out of business.
